What the design rests on

Why we didn't
make a new chart

A plan already tested for nearly thirty years exists. We moved it over so it works well in Korea.

ORIGIN

Couch to 5K · 1996

Josh Clark made it. Alternating walking and running, you reach 30 minutes of continuous running in nine weeks. The conditions — three times a week, 20 to 30 minutes a session — are kept as they are.

ADOPTION

Adopted by the UK NHS · 2010

A national health service adopted it as an official programme and even released an app. That means evidence has accumulated on beginner safety and completion rates.

OUR PART

What we moved over for Korean conditions

We added an indoor alternative for rainy and high-dust days, a cut-down version for overtime weeks, and a 16-week countdown plan aligned with the domestic race calendar.

What you get

It's all online.
No equipment, no measurements

What Atovia does today is online lectures and record-keeping. We do not list equipment we don't have.

VIDEO

Movement videos and a schedule

A table saying exactly what to do, how many times, on which days — plus the movement videos. Print it for the wall or keep it on your phone.

SELF

How to measure it yourself

No InBody, no VO2max. Instead, you'll learn to measure yourself at home the same way every time. It's not the equipment that shows the change — it's measuring the same way, again and again.

1:1

We meet over video

A person joins only at the last stage — checking your form over video and reading the record with you. There is no physical facility.

FAQ

Common questions

Is it okay if I can't swim at all?

That's fine. The first four weeks of Second Breath are about getting comfortable in the water. Breathing comes before kicking.

I don't have a bike.

You won't need one until Third Breath. Even then, most people start with a rental. The equipment list separates what to buy from what to rent.

My knees aren't great.

First Breath starts with walking mixed in. The plan includes what to do for pain at specific spots. If you have a diagnosed injury, though, see a doctor first.

Do I have to do all three events?

No. You can do First Breath and just keep running from there. Or stop after Second Breath.

Isn't a triathlon dangerous?

A sprint triathlon is a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. That's different from an Olympic or Ironman distance. It's set at a distance an average person can reach with six months of preparation.

Do I have to enter a race?

No. You can cover the same distance on your own. But having a set date makes it much easier to stick with it.

Is there an age limit?

Your current condition matters more than your age. Before starting First Breath, you measure yourself with a self-assessment form and start from there.
